WEDDING EXPERIENCE GUIDE

Details, information and recommendations

Welcome

To provide a little support to my clients in planning their wedding, I've put together this wedding guide. Inside, you'll find tips on various aspects, including those I, as a photographer, also deal with.

I will talk about the day's schedule and how I approach it as a photographer. Having a photoshoot in the middle of the day is practical, of course, but is it the best choice?

And if you're still searching for a specific wedding vendor, you'll find a list at the end where I've had a good experience.

Are there any questions? Let me know. I would be happy to help you further.

Your wedding day

I will capture your day as it is. combined with my creativity and eye for detail and emotions. Your photo gallery will be one-of-a-kind. And the best part is: there were so many moments afterwards that you were not aware of. No doubt there will be a lot of surprises in the photos afterwards!

  • It's the calm before the storm. Some already have some nerves, but others feel relaxed. For me this is one of my favorite moments. It's very intimate. And I get to capture you as you transform into a bride.

Many bridal couples get dressed with their loved ones nearby. I photograph the connection you have with your loved ones. Sometimes the getting ready ends with a toast moment. That is often a nice image to capture. But that's up to you. Above all, don't make the room too crowded, as that can cause a lot of noise and distrections.

I also use this moment to capture details. Think of shoes, jewelry, bridal bouquet, veil and wedding rings. But sometimes also the stationery. It's nice when everything is ready. I also like to hang a dress/suit in a nice spot.

The best thing is to reserve a nice bright room, different from the room where you display all your things. That can look a bit messy. This may perhaps be possible at the wedding location itself. Or alternatively, see if there is a hotel nearby.

    Advice:

    • Have a wooden hanger ready! That looks better than the plastic brand hangers.

    • Get a nice ring box without a brand name.

    • Ask if the florist/stylist has extra single flowers. I can use this when documenting the stationery.

    • Make sure that the ladies have already changed, so that they also look beautiful in the photo while the bride is getting ready.

If the groom is getting ready nearby, I would also like to visit him to capture his moment of getting dressed.

Think of shoes, bow ties, cufflinks and corsages. Here too, ensure a bright and tidy room.

  • Not everyone chooses to do it, but some want a special moment to see each other for the first time. This can be before the ceremony or during the ceremony as the bride walks down the aisle. Choose what feels right for you!

It would be helpful for me to know how you'd like to do this. In the case of a first look before the ceremony, please pick an outdoor location. Avoid indoors, in front of the door, in a hallway, or from a staircase. There's very limited space for me to capture your expressions well in those settings. If you organize this outdoors, I'll have more time and freedom of movement.

Usually, I start by placing the bride or groom with their back to the bride's arrival. Then the bride walks up. Upon my signal, the bride or groom turns around (unless otherwise agreed, of course).

My advice is to plan a photo shoot immediately after the first look, so that you have more time with your guests later in the day.

Since the first look in combination with a photo shoot is often before the ceremony, this will most likely be planned around noon. On a sunny day the light is very harsh. I prefer to shoot in the shade.

Advice: Also plan 15 minutes for a short photo shoot around sunset. This way you can still use that romantic light.

  • It is nice to gather the bridal party together immediately after your photo shoot. This way we can take photos with the ladies and the gentlemen separately.

I also recommend using this moment for family portraits. Gather only immediate family members for these group photos.

Half an hour is enough, but everyone has to know upfront exactly where they need to be at what time. If we still have time left, we can use this time to take some extra photos with a best friend or family member separately.

I would like to receive a list of combinations in advance. I recommend to have someone who can coordinate these combinations.

    Example of a list:

Bride and groom with the bride's parents
Bridal couple with parents and siblings of the bride
Bride and groom with parents, siblings, partners, nieces, nephews and grandparents of the bride
Bride and groom with the bride's grandparents
Bridal couple with parents of bride and groom

    Bridal couple with groom's parents
Bridal couple with parents and siblings of the groom
Bridal couple with parents, siblings, partners, nieces, nephews and grandparents of the groom
Bridal couple with grandparents of the groom

  • Time to say yes! The moment your love story is told to all your dear friends and family members. This is sometimes an emotional moment. There is also a lot of laughter. And that's why I make sure that I listen carefully to the story.

With my experience, I can sometimes anticipate when a tear might be shed. I try to capture everything without being intrusive. I aim to move around as unobtrusively as possible and not be a distraction to you or your guests.

Don't mind me and let it all happen naturally.

Advice: Light is everything for good photos. It is important that you are in good light. This means that it is better not to let direct light shine on your eyes when you have an outdoor ceremony. That makes you squeeze your eyes and creates harsh shadows.

During the same period, at the same time, check the location of your ceremony in advance, so that you can check how the light hits the ceremony area. This way you still have enough time to discuss how you can best set it all up. If this is difficult because you are getting married abroad, for example, ask the location for photos of previous couples who got married in the same period.

Advice: Afterwards: are you walking down the aisle? If you stop halfway for a legendary kiss, you will get some great pictures!

  • The moment when there is relief for many bridal couples. The tension is lifted, the party can begin.

There will be toasts, congratulations and perhaps speeches. I like to capture the cake, decorations and other details before the guests enter the area

Many people choose to cut cake during their cocktail hour. But nowadays it is also very common to do that after dinner. The moment of cutting is often very nice on capture.

Please note: if you did not have the first look in before the ceremony, then you haven't had group photos with your family members yet. In this case I need 40 minutes in this part of the day to make this happen. On the other hand, we can schedule 20 minutes for some group photos with your favorite friends when you already have had your first look and family portraits taken.

  • And then it's time for dinner. You've probably heard it from me already, but I don't photograph people while they're eating. In practice, this means that I'm usually present for the first 20-30 minutes to capture the atmosphere and some portraits.

Sometimes we also have to focus on the sunset around dinner. Have you scheduled a short evening shoot? Don't forget to communicate this with the kitchen so they can take it into account.

There are also often speeches during dinner. I'll make sure I capture it all.
I would like to eat something too! It is nice if a crew meal has already been arranged.
I like a spot out of sight of the guests. Sometimes I also use my break time to make a backup with my laptop.

I hope you will enjoy it immensely. Feel free, carefree and soak it all in. Because: blink once and your day is over in no time. Luckily you still have the photos ;).

  • I’m often just there for the first hour.

I photograph the first dance moves of your guests. Perhaps you will do a first dance or other special entrance. And of course I capture the fun and joy of the evening.

Please note: smoke machines are a real killer for the photos. Nothing will be visible in the picture. And are there lasers available? These bad guys will break my equipment. These two elements are a big No-Go for me during a party. So make sure that these attributes are not used during my presence.

Finally, it is best if white or soft yellow light is used during your entrance / first dance. No crazy colors. Orange, green, blue and purple look festive, but they don't do the photos any favors. Skin tones change color and decoration and clothing also have a strange contrast.

Wedding albums

Photos are taken to be printed. And what could be better than a special book full of all your memories of the best day of your life? A book full of love, emotions and your most loved ones?

If you have an album included in your package, I will send you a first draft after the wedding. You may submit changes up to twice free of charge.

For the looks of the album, you can choose from linen, leather and artificial leather.

It is also possible to have a duplicate parent albums made.

Engagement shoot

Do you have an engagement shoot in your package? Then we will make a separate appointment for this. We will discuss the location of the shoot in advance and perhaps include an activity that suits you.

Engagement shoots last 1.5 hours and you will receive the photos from me within 4 weeks. These might come in handy with your Save the Date. But it can also be a way to get to know me and my working method.

Favorite vendors

Have you got everything arranged? If not, next are some tips for vendors you might consider contacting. I know these professionals are passionate about their work, and I personally enjoy working with them. However, feel free to follow your own plan if you already know someone you're comfortable with. And if something is missing from the list and you have a question about it, don't hesitate to send me a message! I'd be happy to check my network for you.
